STAND

STAND is a student run club which focuses on humanitarian efforts worldwide in stopping genocide in Darfur and crimes against humanity especially in Uganda, Burma and The Republic of Congo. Last year, STAND was named Achievement Above All for outstanding club on campus. Currently, STAND sponsors Gulu High School in Northern Uganda, Sempaya Academy in Southern Uganada, and the Darfur Schools Project in Darfur, Sudan. We encourage all students to join at anytime throughout the year and to STAND up for others who cannot do so for themselves.

STAND would proudly like to thank all of the students, staff, and entire Thunderbird community for making the Invisible Children Schools for Schools Book Drive a huge success by raising 10,361 books.  Through a united effort, hard work and generosity, STAND reached its 10,000 book goal participating in what has been called the biggest book drive in the world.  Congratulations to Mr. Eric Smith’s homeroom class who collected over 1,000 books and won a pizza party. In addition, STAND would like to give special recognition to Mrs. Roxanne Brown’s class at Mountain Sky Junior High who helped out by raising over 1,000 books in one week as well.

Schools for Schools is an organization committed to rebuilding schools in the war-torn region of northern Uganda. Right now, northern Uganda is facing the end of 23 years of war. Reconstruction of schools and the rehabilitation of abducted children who were forced to be child soldiers has been the main mission of Invisible Children.

Schools for Schools provides the chance to give thousands of students the opportunity of a lifetime – a quality education. Education is one of the most important factors in helping countries move beyond civil strife. These books will truly make a world of difference for the students in the war torn region of Uganda and other parts of Africa as well.  Jane Evershed once said, " To read is to empower, to empower is to write, to write is to influence, to influence is to change, and to change is to live." Thank you for giving others the opportunity to truly live through the power of books.

Nov. 15- STAND State Convention at Desert Vista High School. Learn how to lobby your state and national congressmen and how network with other student activists.

Dec. 10-STANDFast- We will be giving  up the cost of one luxury item to help protect the people of Darfur along with a rally at lunch in which students will write postcards to their new president and state senators and representatives. Help us design our new STAND t-shirt, too!

Congratulations to founder of  Thunderbird STAND Dane Sorenson for being named  National Arizona Outreach Coordinator for STAND. Dane represents us with pride with direct connections to national leaders throughout the country and will be heading to the National STAND conference in Washington DC in November.
