Regular attendance is not only an essential part of your child’s learning process, it is also key in their pursuit of a quality education.  Students should only miss school when absolutely necessary, as a lot of the classroom activity cannot be made up.  The benefits of teacher modeling, student participation, classroom discussion, and guided practice are lost forever to those who are absent.  Please remember that attendance is the responsibility of both students and parents/guardians.  Here is how to help your child be successful:

If Your Child is Absent
What number do I call if my child is absent?
Please call our attendance hotline, 623-915-8901
(623-915-8913 para espanol) , 24 hours a day.
When do I call if my child is absent?
A parent must call the day of absence.  If no call is received, Thunderbird calls home that evening using the auto dialer to your home number.  A parent must call within 48 hours of the absence to excuse the absence.  (For example, if son or daughter is absent on a Monday, we need a call by 2 p.m. on Wednesday)
What happens if there is no call to excuse the absence by 2 p.m.?
The absence becomes unexcused or marked as truancy.  If a student is truant for a class, a 3-hour detention is assigned on Wednesday or Saturday..
How many excused absences can a student have?
A student can accumulate twelve excused absences per semester.  Any additional absences after twelve will require a doctor’s excuse or note and is considered excessively absent.  If no note is given, the absence turns into a truancy and a 3-hour Wednesday or Saturday detention will be assigned.
If I have additional questions, what do I do?
  • Monitor your child’s attendance and timeliness online by contacting the counseling office and setting up your Parent Portal at 623-915-8915.
  • Verify the number our automated dialer uses to call home for school communication
  • Please call the Attendance Office at
    623-915-8901
    before there is a problem.
  • Set up an appointment with the Dean of Students by calling 623-915-8911.
If Your Child is Late or Tardy
What happens if my child is late for first period?
School begins at 8:00 a.m.
  • If your child arrives after 8:00 a.m. and before 8:30 a.m. your child is to go to SWEEP in room 608. They will be marked tardy.
  • The only acceptable excuses for tardies are medical, legal, or dental.  Parent phone calls will not excuse the tardy.
  • If your child arrives after 8:30 a.m. they are marked absent and sent to SWEEP in room 608.
  • Consequences for  tardies will be issued after the 4th tardy. Tardies 5-7 are in- school suspension and any tardies beyond 8 will be off-campus suspension.
  • THS does not excuse late arrivals. In the case of a late bus, students will be given a pass to class without penalty.
How does the tardy policy work for classes other than first hour?
  • Students have five minutes to get to class.  If they are late, they report to SWEEP in room 608.
  • After the fourth tardy, a meeting with the Assistant Principal will take place and in-school suspensions or off-campus suspension will be given.
  • If students arrives in SWEEP thirty minutes after the tardy bell without a pass, they will be marked truant.  Truancy consequences then apply.
If I have additional questions what can I do?
  • Monitor your child’s attendance, tardies, and grades online by setting up the Parent Portal by calling the counseling office at 623-915-8915.
  • Verify the number our automated dialer uses to call home for school communication
  • Please call the Attendance Office at
    623-915-8901
    before there is a problem.
