GUHSD School Within A School Program Guide
Goal: Opportunity for credit recovery and acquisition of social and academic skills to transition into mainstream classes.
Locations: Apollo, Moon Valley, and Thunderbird
Apollo Pod: Apollo, Glendale, Independence
Moon Valley Pod: Cortez, Moon Valley, Washington
Thunderbird Pod: Greenway, Sunnyslope, Thunderbird

**Note: Students will provide their own transportation
Program Times: Two sessions will be available at each pod location, an AM session and a PM session. The AM session will run from 8 AM until 12 PM. The PM session will run from 12 PM until 4 PM. Mrs. Velasquez runs AM @ THS
Procedures for Enrollment:
- Student is referred to home AP/DA (usually by social worker or counselor)
- Home AP/DA meets with the parent and the student to determine if the student meets criteria for interview with SWS teacher and explains that SWS is the last GUHSD option.
- Home AP/DA completes referral form (see addendum), determines AM or PM session and sends it to the counselor for a credit review and advisement.
- Completed paperwork (includes transcript and student disposition) goes to the Pod.
- A SWS teacher contacts the parent and student to setup an interview.
- After the interview, the SWS teacher contacts the AP/DA to finalize admission.
**Note: The student will remain registered to the home school. Students will NOT be allowed to be dually enrolled in day school and SWS.
Hours in Program: 4 hours per day, 5 day a week
Length of Stay in the Program: 1 semester.
Student Qualifications (in order of priority):
- Students behind in credits (priority going to seniors, then juniors, then sophomores)
- Late enrollees.
- Students who have excessive absences in day school.
- Students with medical conditions or other crisis.
Attendance Policy: Seven absences/tardies prorated to the student’s entry date.
**Note: Only Seniors in SWS may be eligible to participate in sports since underclassmen are required to be enrolled in 5 courses for eligibility.
Grading: Students are required to pass their final exams with a 60% or they will not be awarded credit, regardless of their overall grade. For example, if a student has a 90% in their English 6 course, but that same student fails their final exam (59% or lower), that student WILL FAIL the English 6 course.

AIMS READING INFORMATION
6th Hour, Room 300 & 105
AIMS Reading is an elective offered to students who have yet to pass the AIMS reading test for high school graduation.
Objective: Students will study AIMS concepts through literature, poetry, and non-fiction in addition to focusing on comprehnsion and test-taking skills.

THUNDERBIRD VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM
Camp is August 3-6th in main gym
Tryouts are Monday, August 10th
Freshman tryouts at 3pm in the main gym
J.V. Tryouts at 4:30 in the main gym
Varsity trouts are 3pm in the main gym
**Bring tennis shoes and/or court shoes, sports bra, shorts and a t-shirt (no jeans or non-athletic shoes).
