NAVAL SCIENCE INSTRUCTOR

Senior Chief Petty Officer Shepherd of Phoenix, Arizona enlisted in the U.S. Navy 1982, completed basic training in San Diego, California, and attended Seaman Apprenticeship Training prior to his initial assignment at Kilauea Military Camp on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Follow on assighnments include USS Whipple (FF-1071) in Pearl Harbor, HI as a deck seaman, rescue swimmer, and boat coxswain; The Naval Special Warfare Center in Coronado, California; USS Badger (FF-1071) Pearl Harbor, HI; Navy Recruiting District (NRD) San Diego; Assault Craft Unit One (ACU-1) in Coronado California as a Landing Craft Utility (LCU) Craft Master; NRD Phoenix, Arizona as recruiter in charge. Returned to ACU-1 as the Leading Chief Petty Officer to lead a squadron of 14 LCU’s, and 240 Sailors; Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Three (HSC-3) in Coronado, California as the Chief of Naval Operations Search and Rescue Model Manager for surface operations, and as the command’s senior enlisted advisor.  He retired from the USS Tarawa (LHA-1) in 2007, after 25 years active duty to accept the Naval Science Instructor position at Thunderbird High School to prepare young men and women for success.

Senior Chief Shepherd earned a Bachelor of Science in Management, and a Master of Arts in Education. In addition, he is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy at New Port, Rhode Island, and the Maritime Institute of San Diego, California where he earned a United States Coast Guard Master (Captain) license, and designation as a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer.

While on active duty Senior Chief Shepherd qualified as Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, Aviation Warfare Specialist, Craft Master, and Small Craft Operator. During his tours at ACU-1 He severed as a Craft Master, and Officer in Charge of numerous LCU’s, the Navy’s largest ocean going vessel commanded by enlisted men.   

Senior Chief Shepherd’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal (4 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards), Combat Action Ribbon, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation (6 awards), Navy “E” Ribbon (6 awards), Good Conduct Medal (5 awards) Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (6 awards), Navy Recruiting Ribbon, Expert Rifleman and Sharpshooter pistol Shot.

Senior Chief Shepherd and his wife Dona live in Phoenix, Arizona; together they have three grown daughters.
